10 Benefits of Restorative Yoga

A restorative practice frequently relies on the use of props and the prolonged holding of a few simple poses to achieve a deep level of relaxation. “Restorative yoga” can also be an umbrella term that encompasses several sub-styles of relaxation and healing-based Hatha yoga practices, such as the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga. But what exactly makes this style of yoga unique? Here are some of the benefits a restorative yoga practice has to offer. Slows Down the Pace of Life Restorative yoga is an excellent opportunity to disconnect from the frenetic activity of daily life and let your speedometer return to 0 mph. It offers a welcome respite among all the turbulence of life and helps to prepare the mind and body for the inward stroke of meditation and deepened awareness. Moving slowly through the poses allows you to explore your mind and body at a steady and natural tempo. Soothing to the Nervous System The slower pace and deep breathing that you get in a restorative yoga class triggers the parasympathetic nervous system from the very first pose. This activation helps to mitigate the effects of the regular fight-or-flight stress response that can be damaging to your physiology and well-being. The overall calming effect on the nervous system sets a deeply relaxing tone for the class that comforts your mind and body down to the cellular level. Encourages Mindfulness Restorative yoga could just as easily be called “mindful yoga” due to the expanded awareness of self and body that comes through the practice. Slower movements cultivate space for a deeper experience of the poses and the breath. Awareness of the physical sensations, the thoughts or emotions that arise, or sounds in the environment, can all take on a much more profound significance in the depth of the restorative practice. Simply put, you’re able to notice and feel more of the world through your yoga experience. Fosters Transcendence On the whole, many forms of Hatha yoga are considered a precursor to extended periods of meditation. Through the practice, muscles, joints, and subtle energy centers are enlivened to help facilitate a deeper and more comfortable experience of meditation. However, the practice of restorative yoga in and of itself often leads to a transcendent experience of deep oneness with the universal level of consciousness. Each pose and each breath serves to lead you further up the ladder of expanded awareness. As the practice expands, the vehicle of yoga carries you from the waking state of consciousness into the silent space between your thoughts—the space from where you’re able to glimpse the soul and awaken the divinity within. Cultivates Heightened Body Awareness The comfortable pace of restorative yoga opens the doorway to a deeper understanding of your own body, letting you actually feel what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. Sadly, many people aren’t intimate with their own bodies. Through a restorative yoga practice, however, such intimacy can be explored and embraced. Deeper levels of bodily strengths can be integrated and owned and a more profound sense of self-love and acceptance can emerge. Deepens Self-Awareness and Introspection The subdued quality of a restorative yoga class often helps you draw attention inward and away from external events and situations of the world. With your awareness directed within, the practice becomes a sanctuary for the mind and spirit from which you can take a deeper look at who you are, what you want, and how you can serve the world. Restorative yoga opens us up to new levels of self-exploration and contemplation, allowing your inner being to shine forth. Creates Deliberateness of Action Through the mindfulness of the practice, you become increasingly aware of your actions or karmas, and how they influence your level of comfort or discomfort. You can see the direct cause and effect relationship between your poses, breathing, and overall level of well-being. As this experience continues to deepen, you begin to make more deliberate and attentive choices, both on and off the mat. Strengthens Acceptance and Detachment By its very nature, the restorative yoga practice is the antithesis of the “no-pain-no-gain” mentality. You receive the greatest benefits from your practice not through forcing yourself into a pose, but by releasing and surrendering to it. This mentality helps to cultivate acceptance of your body and its inherent limitations. Further, it strengthens your ability to let go of preconceived notions of your body and how you think it should look or feel, both in and out of a pose. When increased ease and comfort are the theme of your yoga practice, acceptance and detachment naturally emerge as a result. Helps You Feel Safe and Nurtured In daily life it’s easy to get pulled into the insecurity that is a byproduct of the modern world. Many people move through their days haunted by fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Restorative yoga provides you with a safe harbor wherein you can reconnect with your true nature, which is immortal, invincible, pure, and nourishing. Making that connection through your poses, breathing, and deep relaxation restores the memory of who you are and helps you to reclaim the fearless nature of your soul. From this refuge, you emerge feeling secure in the inherent goodness within your heart and in the world. Connects You to the Divine and Establishes You in Pure Being The ultimate goal of yoga is union with the divine. Therefore, your practice should be a means to that end. Luckily, restorative yoga is the perfect vehicle to help you reconnect with the divinity within. Through the techniques of the practice, you awaken grace, poise, flexibility, balance, strength, and present moment awareness. This combination creates a mind and body ideally suited for seamlessly merging into the non-local field of awareness, or pure being. As a tool for self-transformation, restorative yoga facilitates the integration of all the layers of life—environmental, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual—culminating in the goal of all goals, awakening to your own divine nature. Could candlelit yoga help you sleep better?

Fitness instructor Amanda Vogel swears by her nighttime yoga class to help quiet her mind, calm her body and bring on her best sleep of the week Source: Best Health magazine, March/April 2013; Image: Thinkstock Every Monday night, I gather with about 15 other people in a small exercise studio dimly lit by candles. Yoga music plays gently in the background, lulling me into relaxation as I breathe deeply and stretch the day’s tension away. This is ‘Candlelight Yoga,’ a weekly class held at Creekside Community Centre in Vancouver’s Olympic Village, near where I live. I wouldn’t normally go to a gym this late at night. But Candlelight Yoga is an exception. Designed to prepare the mind and body for a good night’s sleep, the program offers unique benefits that I don’t get from my workouts with a personal trainer or from my own work as a fitness instructor: It’s a chance to slow down, focus inward and gently stretch without breaking a sweat. Most daytime yoga classes I’ve looked into are either too long at 90 minutes (cutting into my workday and being a mom to my seven-year-old daughter) or too intense. I craved a class that could balance out the tougher workouts I already do. Candlelight Yoga, a 75-minute pre-bedtime relaxation class, fits the bill. In fact, I often have my best night’s sleep of the week after the session. Classes are popping up across Canada (Google ‘candlelight yoga’ or ‘nighttime yoga’ to see what’s available in your area); my class was created and is led by certified yoga instructor Pamela Ferman of Yoga 4 Heart n Soul. Candlelight Yoga incorporates several styles including Yin Yoga, where still poses such as Lying Twists are held for up to five minutes, and Restorative Yoga, with a focus on relaxation and healing through postures that use props such as bolsters. Holding poses for several minutes has helped me be more flexible and adds to the restful quality of the class (confession: I once dozed off while nestled up to a bolster). ‘There’s lots of stretching with long holds,’ explains Ferman. ‘And the use of props creates a sense of support, and helps with unwinding.’ Along with tension-releasing postures such as Child’s Pose’which gives special attention to commonly tight areas like the hips and thighs, while promoting circulation to the discs and joins of the back’Ferman leads the class through breathing and meditation techniques. ‘This helps relax the nervous system and quiet the mind from constant thought,’ says Ferman. As a Type A personality, I’ve always struggled with quieting my busy mind. I find it’s easier to tame in this class. I notice better concentration and fewer worries during class about my to-do list, because my mind is gearing down for the day. And I carry that calm home with me. By the time I’m rolling up my yoga mat at 10:15 p.m., it truly feels like bedtime. Holistic Therapy: The Path to a Happier Life

By Jap Hari Kaur In this era in which every day we see how our schemes are broken, institutions lose credibility and systems become obsolete, we tend to think that our life is a chaos. Many of our habits, ideologies and thoughts make us feel out of place, make us feel sick and for many, life is just a routine. We do not find satisfactions, there are no clear objectives and we believe that happiness and love are utopian themes. For others, our values are hypocritical, violence and fear increasingly take over on a personal level. Society lives in a state of alert where Peace is affected at all levels. Unfortunately, due to all this, mental related illness and emotional issues are more frequent. The nervous system is affected, we act without control and react from sensations and feelings such as anger, hatred, sadness, disappointment, resentment, jealousy, and sometimes fear takes over us. The commotion leads us to a state of discouragement and depression that little by little are undermining our health and well-being. This is the beginning of conflicts that over time become diseases and addictions in general. We begin to feel in a dead end, where panic attacks can lead us to the idea of suicide and chronic and even terminal illnesses. For thousands of years, yogis in India have experienced postures and meditations that are not only very useful, but in this case, the solution. This practice is the cure. The holistic therapy offered at Abhaya Holistic Center contains all the elements to heal us and get us out of this state of confusion and anguish. Stress and disease no longer seem like endless suffering. We first start by recognizing what happens inside our being, accepting it to be aware and to act on it. Looking at this not from the “Why” but from the “What for”. We modify our perception to know the “What for”. Holistic Therapy treats the individual as a whole: mind, body and spirit; and not as a sick person. One of the things that differentiates Abhaya’s Holistic Therapy from others is the use of Gong sound. This vibration penetrates to very deep levels and has the capacity to restructure organs and systems. The brain receives a new stream of chemical substances modifying the blood chemistry and regulating the functions of the internal organs. Expands the ability to maintain a focused mind and clear thoughts. Emotions and feelings as well as sensations are recognized and understood; so acceptance and change are consequence. Our immune system is strengthened. The tools that Kundalini Yoga offers us in holistic therapy are many. We act on the mind using the reasoning of thought, meditating. This means to silence the mind so that the subconscious and the superconscious connect to give us expansion and power over our own actions and resolutions. It opens the opportunity to recognize within, the power to change our thoughts, our lives. Improving our life day by day. Being happy is your right, but nobody apart from you was born to make you happy, even if that person wanted to. Each one of us is responsible for our own life, for our own actions. The capacity is in you and you can heal yourself. Sat Nam

Get Rid of Your “Couldn’t” -Yogi Bhajan

Excerpts from lectures on 3/5/95 and 9/4/01 Do you remember a day when you wanted to come into class and you couldn’t? It happens. It happens many times. It happens. When you want to get up in the morning and be with your God and Lord, you couldn’t. It happens. When you wanted to love somebody and serve somebody, you really wanted it but you couldn’t. We want to get rid of this ‘couldn’t.’ We want to make our will so clean, so clear, so positive, that the ‘couldn’t’ doesn’t touch our shores. We have a very strong disease: ‘couldn’t.’ And ultimately this ‘couldn’t’ is like a cancer and eats our determination, our essence—because we ‘couldn’t.’ All our problems on this planet come from this ‘couldn’t.’ This ‘couldn’t’ gives us a slip from our Dharma, from our duty. Just imagine Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth master, when he, himself, was decorating his younger son to send him to war. He could, and he did it. Because he had a mastery over ‘couldn’t.’ The Sikhs were there and they said, “Lord, until we are finished you are not supposed to send your son.” He said, “No, let him go and face the war.” For the glory of the Dharma he decorated his own son to go into the war where each soldier was outnumbered by one hundred twenty-five thousand to one. When I came to the United States I started teaching Kundalini Yoga. I knew that at least it’s a science which gives a person excellence. It will create excellent characters; it will take ‘couldn’t’ away from us. It will give us a pathway of an essential sacrifice which will give us maximum happiness. We cannot sacrifice our ego. We cannot sacrifice our attachment. We cannot sacrifice our anger. We cannot sacrifice our lust. We cannot sacrifice our greed. Then, what can we sacrifice? These are the faculties that force our “couldn’t” on us. We make every effort to survive. But we need to survive with the ultimate reality, with applied consciousness, and with absolute reality of grace. We can’t compromise. Some people can do it. Some can’t. There’s nothing personal in it. You can live like a frog in the well or you can live in the ocean. It’s up to you. Things will not change if you don’t change them. What will change things in you is that you, the divine you, which is in you. It is the divinity in you which will allow you to sacrifice. It is the reality in you which will make you realize. Don’t take it personally. It is not personal. It is a general rule of prakirti. It is the law of the Lord. Purkha[3]and prakirti, it shall never change, you have to change with it. Commitment gives you character. That gives you dignity, divinity, grace, the power to sacrifice and then happiness. Because the only thing which dies is the physical body, but there are nine other bodies too. The total account is ten bodies. That’s the reality. You have to learn to love all the ten bodies, not the physical body only. Even if you don’t destroy the physical body, it is going to destroy itself. It’s the law of prakirti. Jo upjo sobinsay. “One who is born has to die.” But the other bodies can help you to be young, fresh and beautiful. This body is given to serve. Recognize there are nine others with it and that is called the path of Dharma. And it is up to you to follow it or deny it. Life is to be lived. Life is a given gift. Atma, the soul, takes the body. The distance of life is covered by destiny and challenged by fate. That’s how it goes. There are no two ways about it. You have your life. You can live. You can have all that you need, and that is destined. But if you want more, you can only get it if you open yourself. Open your doors. A person has to open his heart to others. It is not necessary to try to predominate or dominate other people. Your one beautiful smile, and one, “Hello, how are you?” or “Sat Nam,”—there is so much good it can do, even to a person who doesn’t know you. But to do that, you have to put in your investment. You have to move towards the psyche of another person. You have to show that you are the beloved of the Lord and you are here to live a life for everybody. And this is unlimited. Whatever life is given to you by the pranic energy is unlimited. Once your life gets subject to rhythm, ‘couldn’t’ will go away. ©The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan This lecture can be found in Success and the Spirit available through KRI

Tantric Numerology

Kundalini Yoga is a science without limits. It has ample technology for Human Development. It is the Yoga designated for the awakening of consciousness in the Age of Aquarius, the era of light and renewal. This is one of the legacies of Yogi Bhajan. Tantric Numerology is the tool that reveals to us, through deep studies, the exact characteristics of our own being. The numbers speak to us to help us recognize ourselves and our capacities to achieve our mission in life. By knowing our particular numerology, we gain self-acceptance and self-help. It is from the study of Tantric Numerology that, as a guide and a revelation of who we are, we can understand and lead our life in a more satisfying way, until we reach the achievement of a completely fulfilling life. Tantric numerology uses numbers from 1 to 11 and 5 aspects: Soul, Karma, Divine Gift, Destiny and Purpose. These main points may be out of balance, which may delay our development in the evolutionary process of life. With the practice and discipline of Kundalini Yoga, we can harmonize our path and properly direct our life. Yogi Bhajan, during his life’s journeys across the earth, sowed wonderful seeds that have been cultivated and cared for by practitioners of Kundalini Yoga. In case of Tantric Numerology, Gurudass Singh Khalsa continued this work in 1977 in Barcelona, Spain at the behest of Yogi Bhajan. Later, Maria Lapuente / Krishna, continued the research, application and use of Tantric Numerology. Jap Hari Kaur Founder is Abhaya Holistic Center.

Gong Puja

A puja of Gong is a group meditation of healing and group consciousness, where the group shares an intention (Peace, love, emotional growth, the awakening of consciousness, among others). This is carried out through a Sacred Ceremony, playing and listening to the sound of the Gong for seven and a half hours without any interruption. The benefits of this vary in each person but you can work: Reduction or elimination of stress and tensions Balance of the mind and emotions Liberation of fears, thoughts, and feelings that block the mind Stimulation of the glandular system Regeneration of the nervous system Cleaning of the inner being Harmonization and connection of the true essence and our inner being A Puja of Gong lasts seven and a half hours and, therefore, the experiences and benefits of it can be more intense than those of the Gong bath.

Gong Bath

A Gong bath is when one completely immerses him or herself in the sound and vibration produced by the Gong. This allows us to experience different sensations such as levitation (feeling that your physical body is floating or being elevated), rejuvenation, inner peace, immortality or elimination of the self attachment to the physical body, among other sensations and feelings. The sound and vibration of the Gong leads us to a very deep relaxation that carries the physical, emotional and spiritual body to a state of neutrality, producing a natural healing of these in several aspects: Reduces stress and tension Balances the mind and emotions Frees the fears, thoughts and feelings that block the mind Stimulates the glandular system Regenerates the nervous system Cleans ,harmonizes and helps connect to the true essence of the inner being   A Gong bath is always a magical experience that produces different feelings and has various benefits, calming the mind and bringing us to experience the true self and the so desired inner peace.

The Sound of Gong

As Rudhyar explained, “OM is the great gong tone of life”. Gong has the power of dematerialization, levitation, rejuvenation, inner peace, and immortality. Each tone is the “Ashvatta Tree,” the very essence and symbol of Nature. The tones are harmonic and the fundamental sound energy of the Being. The sound is the wave that transports the tone, expressing the operation of the Creative Will. There are two forms of sound: 1) Ahatta, which is the sound physically perceived and 2) Anahatta, which is the silent sound within the heart that is mentally perceived. The Gong produces living perceived tones that come directly from the creative, non-material, vacuum that the Buddhists call “The Void” and the Raja-yogis call “Shunia”. A field of gong is a sacred space of sound full of vibrations AUM. The cosmic music of the Gong is called “dissonant harmony”. Sacred dissonance is not resolved in the material world but finds its resolution on the spiritual plane. The sound of Gong, as a healing instrument, allows the vibration of sound to arrive simultaneously at the cells of living beings, may these be people or other, such as plants, animals, or the Earth itself. Fundamentally, the word Healing means to be complete, to have fullness, and to be completely resonant. A practitioner of holistic health works on the premise that only the healing object can heal itself, whether it is a person or the Earth itself. A healer is simply someone or something that helps the object or human being to return to his or her innate being. Helping another to completely return to the peak of its resonant, in a physical, emotional and spiritual sense, constitutes the purpose of what we call Holistic Health.

Yoga Kundalini

Kundalini Yoga, recognized as the mother of all yogas, is the yoga of consciousness. It originated in India, dating back to at least 3000 years ago, and was brought to America by Yogi Bhajan in 1969. It was jealously guarded by Yogis that were very advanced in studies of body, mind and soul. Kundalini yoga has been taught directly from person to person in order to cultivate and maintain the connection between teacher and student. It keeps its origin and its lineage. Kundalini Yoga requires a discipline in which the student develops the perfect balance between mind, body and soul, becoming a very healthy person with a well-focused and directed mind, living in harmony.

What are the Chakras?

They are the centers of strength that sustain the ethereal body of every human being. They are the borders of energy that exist within the ethereal body. They are the foundation of the invisible body; also known as the soul, the vehicle in which the vital currents of energy keep the organism alive. Without the flow of energy, the physical body, the one we touch and see, would not exist. Kundalini Yoga works consciously to activate the ethereal body and to awaken this internal flow; consequently, giving health to the entire organism. It creates awareness within each and every one of us.

Why you should go to yoga

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in India. There is a broad variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism. General information (h2) The origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions, but most likely developed around the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, in ancient India’s ascetic circles, which are also credited with the early sramana movements. Goal of Yoga (h3) The chronology of earliest texts describing yoga-practices is unclear, varyingly credited to Hindu Upanishads and Buddhist Pāli Canon, probably of third century BCE or later. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali date from the first half of the 1st millennium CE, but only gained prominence in the 20th century. Schools of yoga (h4) Hatha yoga texts emerged around 11th century CE, and in its origins was related to Tantrism. Modern history (h5) Many studies have tried to determine the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease. The results of these studies have been mixed and inconclusive, with cancer studies suggesting none to unclear effectiveness, and others suggesting yoga may reduce risk factors and aid in a patient’s psychological healing process. Yoga came to the attention of an educated western public in the mid-19th century along with other topics of Indian philosophy. In the context of this budding interest, N. C. Paul published his Treatise on Yoga Philosophy in 1851. According to Jacobsen, “Yoga has five principal meanings: Yoga as a disciplined method for attaining a goal Yoga as techniques of controlling the body and the mind Yoga as a name of one of the schools or systems of philosophy (darśana) Yoga in connection with other words, such as “hatha-, mantra-, and laya-,” referring to traditions specialising in particular techniques of yoga Yoga as the goal of Yoga practice Yoga as a disciplined method for attaining a goal; Yoga as techniques of controlling the body and the mind; Yoga as a name of one of the schools or systems of philosophy (darśana); Yoga in connection with other words, such as “hatha-, mantra-, and laya-,” referring to traditions specialising in particular techniques of yoga; Yoga as the goal of Yoga practice

You can always control what goes on inside

When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath. Yoga is the fountain of youth

Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be. Yoga is possible for anybody who really wants it

Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self realization. Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day to day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.
